Warren Russell Acker

Mr. Warren Russell Acker, Major, U.S. Army Ret., son of Lloyd R. and Zella D Fisk Acker, died Friday, August 3, 2012 at his home. He was a native of Waubay, South Dakota and graduated in 1960 from Hazel High School in Hazel, South Dakota. In 1965, he was activated from reserve to active duty and served two tours duty in Viet Nam with distinction. Major Acker was awarded the following medals: two Purple Hearts, twenty-two Air Medals, one of which with a “V” Device for Valor, the Bronze Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross. In 1972, he joined the Georgia National Guard and retired after twenty years of service. He was an active member of the American Legion, Viet Nam Veterans Helicopter Pilots Association, and Dark Horse. In 1980, he built and established the Pizza Inn of Vidalia, later the Pizza Inn of Statesboro and was the owner of the former Game Room of Vidalia. Most recently, he retired as an over the road truck driver with Crete Carrier Corporation. He was a member of the McGregor Presbyterian Church and was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Lota Acker and a brother, Virgil Acker.

Major Acker is survived by five children, Timothy W. Acker, USN, Ret. and wife Susan of Knoxville, Tennessee, Shelly Acker-Day of Idaho, Suzanne Acker of Statesboro, Kem Agerton of Uvalda and Vicki Forte and husband Steven of Green Cove Springs, Florida; one brother, Lloyd Eugene Acker and wife Sandra of Missoula, Montana; one sister, Ellen Acker Rasmussen and husband Don of Springfield Oregon; twelve grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Monday, August 6th at 12:00 pm in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend David Blalock officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the McGregor Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 215, Mt. Vernon, GA 30445.
