Mr. Jerry Wilburn “Turk” Powell, age 67, of Vidalia, died Monday, November 23, 2015 in the Community Hospice House in Vidalia, after a brief illness. He was a native of Toombs County, and was a 1966 graduate of Vidalia High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in the Vietnam War. For many years, he was a radio broadcaster for WBYZ in Baxley, and WHJD in Hazlehurst and for the past twenty years was a taxi cab driver. He formerly attended the Liberty Baptist Church in Lyons. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilburn and Rosa Lee Holton Powell; a sister, Christine Carnley; and a brother, Raymond Anderson.
Mr. Powell is survived by one son, Damon C. Powell and wife Frances of Vidalia; one sister, Bonnie Powell Heimer; one brother, Curtis Anderson and wife Cheryl, all of Naples, Florida; three grandchildren, Damon Powell, Cody Powell, and Brooke Powell; one great-granddaughter, Britleigh Powell, all of Vidalia; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The graveside funeral service will be held Wednesday, November 25th at 3:00 p.m. in the South Thompson Baptist Church Cemetery with Pastor Reece Mincey officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.
