Mr. John Wayne Fountain, age 71, of Vidalia, died Thursday, November 17, 2016, in the Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia, after an extended illness.  He was a native of Toombs County, and was a 1962 graduate of Vidalia High School.  He lived in Hazlehurst for thirty-three years, and returned to Vidalia in 2013.  He retired after forty years as local manager of Georgia Power in Hazlehurst.  He served as Mayor of Hazlehurst, the Hazlehurst City Council, and served twelve years on the Jeff Davis Board of Education.  He served on the Jeff Davis County Hospital Board and as Executive Director the Jeff Davis Developmental Authority.  He was a longtime member of the Board of Directors of the Hazlehurst Chamber of Commerce, and served as President on two different occasions.  He was a longtime participant in Leadership Georgia.  He served on the Board of Directors of Altamaha Technical College in Jesup for many years, and in various capacities within the Board.  He was Past President of the Hazlehurst Rotary Club, and was a Paul Harris Fellowship recipient.  He was Past President of the Hazlehurst Kiwanis Club, and was a member of the Exchange Club in which he held several offices.  He was chosen as the 1981 Man of the Year in Hazlehurst.  He was a member of Helena Masonic Lodge, and was a Shriner.  He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hazlehurst, and was a volunteer with the Hazlehurst Fire Department.  He was preceded in death by his parents, M.C and Floriza Dixon Fountain.  

Mr. Fountain is survived by his wife, Carolyn Morris Fountain of Vidalia; six children, Donna Fountain of Tucker, Jim Fountain of Cartersville, Andrea Mosley Ford and husband Chuck of Conyers, Sharon Sharpe Smith and husband Phil of Hartwell, Clay Sharpe and wife Melinda of Jacksonville, Florida, and Carolanne Fountain Jones and husband Bill of Vidalia; one brother, Lamar Fountain and wife Nell of Higgston; twelve grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, November 19th at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Pastor Reece Mincey officiating.  Burial will follow in the Ferguson Cemetery near Higgston.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday afternoon from 12:00 until just prior to the service, and will assemble at the residence of a daughter, Carolanne and Bill Jones, 670 Joe Hilton Road, Vidalia.
