Lyons,

Dr. Donald J. Payne, D.M.D., age 69, of Lyons, died Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at his home after an unexpected illness.  He was a native of Commerce and grew up in north Georgia.  He was a 1970 graduate of the Medical College of Georgia, earning a Doctorate of Medicine in Dentistry, and started Donald J. Payne Dentistry in Lyons in 1976.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lyons, served as a Lyons City Councilman in the late 80’s and early 90’s. He was an Eagle Scout, served in the United States Navy, and enjoyed working with flowers in his garden. He was preceded in death by his son, Jeremy Richard Payne and his parents, L.G. and Nell Payne.

Dr. Payne is survived by two sons, Rusty Payne and wife Ashley of Vidalia and Jeffrey Payne of Glenwood; one sister, Suzanne Yarbrough of Powder Springs; and one granddaughter, Chesney Burch of Vidalia.

The memorial service will be held Sunday, May 28th at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend Trent Akins officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon from 1:30 until just prior to the service.
