William Fulghum, Sr. Obituary

William Lee “Billy” Fulghum, Sr., 95, died peacefully on Monday, August 26, 2024, at his residence in Jacksonville. Billy was born in 1928 in Fort Oglethorpe, GA to MSgt. Willie Sutton Fulghum and Amy Lindsey Fulghum. He grew up there, Anniston (AL) and Wahiawa (HI) before events of WWII prompted his family’s move to Higgston, Georgia, to live among their Toombs County relatives. He would serve his country in the US Air Force as a Staff Sergeant electronics instructor. Billy married his great love, Hazel Coleman (†2006) of Vidalia, GA. He was a deeply devoted husband, caring father, faithful son, and always a hard worker in his vocations and avocations. Billy was a man of persistent Christian faith and service to his Savior. True to his nature as a Georgia Tech graduate, he was a garage-workshop creator of ingenious devices and a stubborn mender of broken things.

Billy is survived by his three children, William Lee Fulghum, Jr. of Bremen, GA, Charles Owen Fulghum (Cheryl) of Waynesville, NC, and Camille Fulghum Durden (Todd) of Jacksonville, FL; his brother, Charles Edgar Fulghum of Greensboro, GA; five grandchildren, Mary Holland, Gracie, and Will Fulghum; Chris (Jaimie) and Conner (Janee) Durden, as well as three great grandchildren.

A service of “Remembrance and Resurrection” will be held in the sanctuary of Higgston Baptist Church (512 James St, Ailey, GA 30410) at 1:00 pm on Saturday, September 14, 2024. A short graveside committal service for both Billy and Hazel will follow at Lakeview Memorial Gardens, 4969 GA Hwy 15, Vidalia, GA.
