Mr. Willie Texas “W.T.” Burkett, age 81, of Uvalda, died Friday, January 7, 2022, at his home after an extended illness. He was a native of Jeff Davis County, living in West Green Community in Coffee County and Alma before moving to Toombs County in 1965. He retired after thirty years as a truck driver from Piggly Wiggly Southern in Vidalia and after ten years with Williams Brothers Trucking in Hazlehurst. He enjoyed spending time with family and grandchildren, mechanicing, and repairing appliances and giving them to the elderly in need. He was a member of Smyrna United Methodist Church. He is preceded in death by his wife, Lenora Chambers Burkett; daughter-in-law, Jamie Palmer Burkett; parents, Ivey Quitman Burkett, Sr. and Ola Cassie Wright Burkett; and six siblings.
His family includes three children, Lori Burkett, Tim Burkett and wife Amy, all of Uvalda, and Macie Burkett Owens and husband David of Vidalia; three grandchildren, Morgan Burkett, Blaine Burkett and wife Emily, all of Uvalda, and Casey Owens of Vidalia; three great-grandchildren, Emmaline Stewart, Remi Griner, and Ellie Jo Burkett, all of Uvalda; and numerous nieces and nephews.
As a result of family members with Covid, a private graveside service will be Saturday, January 8th, at 3:30 p.m. at Smyrna United Methodist Church Cemetery with Pastor Steven Toole officiating.
