Vernon Hughes

Mr. Vernon Hughes, age 80, of Vidalia, died peacefully at his home on Friday, September 5, 2025, and went to be with his Lord and Savior. He was born in Oak Park on May 7, 1945, to Lonnie Hughes and Ruby Turner Hughes. He was raised in Oak Park, was a 1963 graduate of Oak Park High School, the last class to graduate in Oak Park. He was a self-employed general contractor, and many years ago he founded the first pool store in Vidalia, Swimmers Pool Center. He built multiple churches in the area and overseas. Unknowingly, Mr. Hughes was extremely charitable in the community, helping widows and those in need. He went on several missionary trips around the world, including Israel, Jamaica, Philippines, Turkey, and Greece. He was a member of The Sanctuary – Sherry Damron Ministries. He enjoyed collecting and restoring old cars, making music with his family, and traveling to all 50 states. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two sisters, Eloise Hughes Deforest and Daphne Hughes Lee.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Faye C. Hughes of Vidalia; one daughter, Sherry Hughes Damron and husband Dwayne of Oak Park; one grandson, Sterling Damron of Oak Park and his fiancé Julia Deets; three brothers, Seab Hughes and wife Cherry of Vidalia, Donny Hughes and wife Tonya of Soperton, and Kelmar Hughes of Waycross; three sisters, Annette Hughes Morris of Augusta, Hazel Hughes Hutto and husband Melvin, and Marie Hughes Carter and husband Jimmy, all of Douglas; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.

The funeral service will be Sunday, September 7th, 2025, at 3:00 in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Pastor Sherry Damron, Sterling Damron, and Pastor Donny Hughes officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Park City Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers are Ronnie Collins, Heath Wingard, Brian Powell, Gene Wiggins, Gilbert Wommack, Clayton Dowd, Drayton Dowd, Kevin Connell, Doyle Connell, and Herbert Toole.
