Mrs. Sonya Jean Powell, age 60, of Vidalia, died Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at the Community Hospice House in Vidalia following an extended illness. She was a lifelong resident of Vidalia and a 1983 graduate of Vidalia High School. She attended Brewton-Parker College where she studied Criminal Justice, and she also attended the University of Georgia. She was owner of S&M Novelty and worked in the family business, T&G Plumbing Supply. She also waitressed at several restaurants, was a dispatcher with the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office, and more recently she worked with Police & Sheriff’s Press. She was a prolific reader, especially Stephen King Novels, and she enjoyed Court TV, traveling, music, crafting, and her furbabies.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Tillman and Gloria Moxley; and a brother, Todd Moxley.
Sonya is survived by her husband of twenty-nine years, Nathan T. Powell; four children, Chris Phillips and wife Brooke, all of Vidalia, Michael Phillips of Uvalda, Brittany McIntyre and husband Andrew, and Nathan D, Powell, all of Vidalia; one brother, Chess Moxley and wife Gayle of Vidalia; and six grandchildren, including C.J., Jacob, and James.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Friday afternoon, March 20th, 2026, from 4:00 until 6:00 at Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home.
