Mr. Roger Mitchell, age 89, of Higgston, died Thursday, November 2, 2023, at the Community Hospice House in Vidalia following a brief illness. He was born in the Shiloh Community in Wheeler County, and then later, as a child, his family moved to Ailey. He was a 1952 graduate of Montgomery County High School. He worked many years with Gordon Foods Potato Chips and with Southern Foods as a meat salesman before retiring in the late 1970s. After retiring, he drove a gas truck for Gay Oil Company, and in 1979, he founded SuperVac of Vidalia Street Sweeper, working primarily for the City of Vidalia. He was Baptist by faith. He was a passionate drag racing enthusiast, but his greatest passion was spending time with family, especially attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. He is preceded in death by his parents, Carson Delone Mitchell, Sr. and Jessie Mae Campbell Mitchell; and brother, Carson Delone Mitchell, Jr.and his wife Dorothy Scott Mitchell.
His family includes his wife of sixty-eight years, Sylvia Purvis Mitchell of Higgston; two daughters, Debbie Mitchell Fletcher and husband Joe of Vidalia, and Donna Mitchell Thompson and husband Lee of Ailey; five grandchildren, Whitney Fletcher Lindsey and husband Eric of Vidalia, Jessie Thompson Jarrard and husband Sam of Ailey, Parker Fletcher and wife Macy of Cedar Crossing, Jordie Thompson Mullis and husband Dylan of Rentz, and Jada Thompson of Ailey; seven great-grandchildren, Emma Kate, Tinslee, Ava Brooke, Wade, Hagin, Laura Jo, and Thatcher; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon, November 5th, from 1:00 until just prior to the funeral service at 3:00 in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Pastor Brian Durden officiating. Burial will follow at Glenwood City Cemetery.
