Reverend William Ray Wood, age 77, of Mount Vernon, died Thursday evening, September 12, 2024, at his residence after an extended illness. He was native of Soperton and lived most of his life in Toombs and Montgomery Counties. He attended Treutlen County Schools and retired from Toombs County School system as a bus driver. He served as Pastor of Mount Vernon Pentecostal Church for forty-seven years and most recently served as Bishop. In his spare, time he enjoyed fishing and watching Gunsmoke. His favorite pastime was being a loving family man, spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a loving and caring pastor, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Jessica Ferguson; parents, Eschol Wood and Bertie Clements Wood; and sisters, Sallie Sprouse and Mallie Needer.
His family includes his wife of fifty-seven years, Christine “Christy” Kirkley Wood of Mount Vernon; two sons, Kendel Wood and wife Melissa of Toombs County and Bryan Wood of Glenwood; five daughters, Angie Wood and significant other Tommy of Toombs County, Rachael Nelms and husband Mitchell, Sarah “Pebbles” Wood, Sheena Lamb and husband Matthew, and Jessy Caraway and husband Nick all of Montgomery County; two sisters, Faye Collins and husband Tommy of Lyons and Sherrie Sellers of Dublin; fourteen grandchildren, Misty Harper and husband Kenny, Trent Ferguson, Madison Wood, Hannah Wood, Brandon Phillips and wife Jenny, Abigail Phillips, Cydney Roy and husband Troy, Taylor Peebles and husband Tyler, Bailey Rogers, Samantha Lamb, Rebecca Lamb, Elizabeth Lamb, Kaden Turner, and Ryland Turner; and several bonus grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and loved ones.
The family will receive friends on Saturday evening, September 14th at Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home from 6:00 until 8:00.
The funeral service will be Sunday afternoon, September 15th, in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home at 3:00 with Pastors Henry G. Lamb and Matthew W. Lamb officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Cemetery.
