Mrs. Peggy J. Whitaker Hardiman, age 82, of Vidalia, died Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at Memorial Health Meadows Hospital in Vidalia after her long battle with dementia and complications of COPD. She was born in Vidalia, living in Toombs County most of her life and in Montgomery County for ten years. She was a 1960 graduate of Vidalia High School where she played basketball and was drum majorette. She was a lifelong member of Blockers Chapel Church where she also sang. Peggy worked many years at Piggy Wiggly Grocery Store, Dudley Sports, and was a private caregiver to many until her retirement. In the mid 1960s, Peggy, among others, was instrumental in starting the area’s first ladies softball league. She enjoyed crocheting, gospel sings, fishing, puzzles and animals. She is preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Hardiman; parents, Roy Lee Whitaker, Sr. and Evelyn Helms Whitaker; and one brother, Allen Whitaker.
Her family includes her daughter, Berri Hardiman Howard and Lonnie; two grandsons, Luke Thompson and Tyler Thompson and wife Ashley, one great-grandson, Aiden Allen Thompson, all of Vidalia; two brothers, Roy “Bussy” Whitaker, Jr. and wife Sandra, and Charles Whitaker and wife April, all of Vidalia; one sister, Marcia Whitaker Parham of Lyons; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.
The funeral service will be Saturday morning, May 3rd, at 11:00 in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Pastor Albert White officiating. Burial will follow at Blockers Chapel Church Cemetery.

The family will assemble at the family home, 341 Taylor Springs Road, Vidalia.
Pallbearers are Clint Parham, Kaine Parham, Bryce Morley, Jamie Whitaker, Aaron White, and Chris Garrett.
