Ophelia "Penny" (Powell) Swinford

Mrs. Ophelia “Penny” Powell Swinford, age 79, died Friday, October 3, 2025, in The Oaks Bethany in Vidalia after an extended illness. She was born on April 27, 1946, in Glenwood, to the late Walter Nelson Powell and Evelyn Hill Powell. She attended Glenwood School. Penny lived in Wisconsin and Texas before returning back to Mt. Vernon. She worked at convenience stores in Glenwood and Mt. Vernon. She enjoyed talking with customers and keeping up with the latest news. She is preceded in death by a son, Ron O’Neal; and two brothers, Elton Powell and Randall Powell.

She is survived by a son, Glen O’Neal and wife Wendy of Mt. Vernon; three grandchildren, Justin O’Neal, Ryan O’Neal, and Kaleb O’Neal; one sister, Lillie Mae Poulnott and husband Mike of Vidalia; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service will be held on Tuesday afternoon, October 7th, 2025 , at 3:00 at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in Wheeler County.

The family will receive friends at the cemetery Tuesday afternoon from 2:30 until just prior to the service.
