Mike Thompson Obituary

Mr. Mike Thompson, age 72, of Mt. Vernon, died Sunday, August 17, 2025, at Wellstar Hospital in Augusta after a brief illness. He was a native of Montgomery County and lived in Mt. Vernon most of his life. He was a 1970 graduate of Montgomery County High School where he played football, baseball and ran track. He logged most of his life, growing up in the family business, Thompson Logging. Later he founded Mt. Vernon Logging Company which he operated for many years. Early in his life, he attended Ailey Baptist Church and recently attended Landmark Baptist Church in Lyons. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing, golf, riding his UTV, and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. He is preceded in death by parents, John Mercer Thompson and Christine Evelyn Green Thompson; and two brothers, David Welch Thompson and John Paul Thompson.

He is survived by one daughter, Christi Thompson Gillis and husband Jim; three grandchildren, Griffin Gillis and wife Allie, Garrett Gillis, and Gracen Gillis; two great-grandchildren, Briar Gillis and Brix Gillis, all of the Kibbee Community; one brother, Dannie Thompson of Uvalda; several nieces, nephews, and cousins, including two nephews, Brett Thompson of Gray’s Landing and Jimmy Thompson of Collins.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening, August 20th, 2025, from 6:00 until 8:00.

A private family burial will follow later at Glenn J. Thompson Cemetery near Ailey.
