William Jemell “Mell” Allen, age 44, passed away on November 30, 2025, in Jacksonville, Florida—twelve years to the day after the passing of his beloved mother. Born on September 27, 1981, in Statesboro, Georgia, he was a longtime resident of Lyons, Georgia, and a 2000 graduate of Toombs County High School.
Following graduation, Mell proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps along with two of his best friends from high school, serving from 2000–2004 as a member of the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. A combat veteran in Operation Iraqi Freedom, he served his country with courage and honor. His commendations include the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Marine Corps Combat Action Ribbon, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with two bronze stars, National Defense Service Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Service Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Iraq Campaign Medal ribbon, Rifle Qualification Badge (Marksman), and Pistol Qualification Badge (Sharpshooter).
After completing his military service, Mell attended Southeastern Technical College, earning an Associate’s degree in Electronics Technology in 2012 and a certificate in Information Technology in 2014. He was a long-time employee at Giro Pack in Vidalia, GA as the Supervisor of Shipping and Receiving for the Commercial Department.
He adored his children, Teagan Shay, William Jase, and Payson Riley of Vidalia, Georgia, who meant the world to him. He is also survived by his father, Larry Jemell Allen of Lyons, Georgia; his sisters Christi (Brad) Gowen of Buford, Georgia, and Gena (Michael) Todd of Baxley, Georgia; nephews Tyler Todd and Wesley Gowen; nieces McKenzie, Kylie, and Natalie Todd and Shelby Gowen, great-niece Raelynn Todd, and great-nephew Jake Todd. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, and close friends.
Mell was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Hutcheson Allen of Lyons, Georgia; his maternal grandparents, William Merida and Rosa Mae Phillips Hutcheson of Soperton, Georgia; and his paternal grandparents, Robert Jemell and Melba Wilkes Allen of Vidalia, Georgia.
Mell attended Connection Church of Vidalia. Those who knew him remember him as friendly—easy to talk to, and always ready with a hug. He loved spending time with his kids. Friends often described him as a “great guy with a huge heart,” an overcomer who faced battles with courage and worked hard to build a better life. Mell never stopped being real, and he never missed a chance to cheer on his Georgia Bulldogs. He was truly one of a kind, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Family and friends will be welcomed at his sister’s house (Gena) at 1281 Altamaha School Road Baxley, Georgia on Saturday, December 6, 2025 from 2:00-5:00 p.m.
Services will be held on Sunday, December 7, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home in Vidalia, Georgia. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. A graveside service will be held at a later date.
People in attendance are encouraged to wear red, black or white to show Mell’s love of the GA Bulldogs.
In lieu of flowers, you can donate to Wounded Warrior Project.
One of his favorite quotes: “God is greater than the highs and low.”
