Mary Winifred Mixon Obituary

Mary Winifred (Lillard) Mixon passed peacefully on November 15, 2024, in Saint Petersburg Florida.  A native of Georgia, she was born March 13th, 1931, in Johnson County Georgia.  Her family eventually moved to Toombs County Georgia. She attended and was baptized in the Methodist Church in Toombs County.  She graduated from Toombs County High School in 1948. She was particularly talented in math, which would serve her well in future occupations.

Mrs. Mixon married William Tracy Mixon on 3 July 1950. Shortly after their marriage, Mr. Mixon would deploy to fight as a young sergeant in the Korean War. During his time away, Mrs. Mixon was employed in Vidalia, Georgia and supported her husband throughout the 15-month separation with various food items and clothing.

During their sixty-four years of marriage, Mrs. Mixon was a dedicated Army spouse enabling her husband to have a successful career. She was the stabilizing force for her family of three children during her husband’s two combat tours in Vietnam. Her travels with her husband included assignments in the Panama Canal Zone, Alaska, Fort Moore (Benning) Georgia, and Fort Liberty (Bragg), to name a few. She pursued a career of her own, becoming a trusted accountant for numerous organizations in the places she lived.  She enjoyed bowling and playing Bingo. She particularly enjoyed sending her grandchildren and great-grandchildren checks and cards for their birthdays and Christmas.  It gave her great joy to see their smiles upon receiving her card which often would contain a sum of money.

Mrs. Mixon was preceded in death by her husband, CSM (Retired) William T. Mixon, her father and mother, John Elmer Lillard and Linnie Mae Caneega Lillard, and four siblings, Lilly Jeanine Lillard Cureton, John Luther Lillard, James Russell Lillard and William Louis Lillard. She has three surviving siblings, Alton Caneega Lillard, Reverend Elmer Jarrell Lillard and Joseph Harvey Lillard.

She is survived by her three children, LTG (Retired) Benjamin R. Mixon, Dr. Sarah Jane Forsythe and Betty Jean Davidson. She was blessed with six grandchildren, Ashlee Holbein, Adrienne Mixon, Amanda Crawford, Charlie Davidson, Michael Bux, Kortney Merrifield and 9 great-grandchildren, Victoria and Michael Merrifield, Mary and Eliza Bux, Palmer Davidson, Raelynn and Leighton Crawford, and Frederick and James Holbein.
