A Celebration of the Life of Marion Witt Wilkes Daniels Hutcheson will be held Saturday, October 19, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Grace Community Presbyterian Church (PCA) at 274 S. Washington Street, Lyons, Georgia 30436, followed by a reception in its fellowship hall.
Marion entered the Gates of Glory on October 11, 2024, after a brief but mighty illness that fell our family matriarch, much as did Hurricane Helene to her beloved south Georgia two weeks earlier. Thankfully, just a few days prior to the storm, she enjoyed a long afternoon ride from her birthplace in Vidalia, to her childhood home in Kibbee during the Great Depression, and back to her married homeplace in Higgston, recounting endless details and facts of local history and family lore connected to each.
Marion's 95th and 96th birthdays were particularly celebrated with memorable gatherings of family and friends. Into her 97th year, she remained mentally alert, albeit a tad wobbly, and a hearing loss did not deter her from insisting on being engaged in any discussion. You did not interrupt her nightly protocol of "Hannity" at 9 pm, followed by an endless stream of Turner Classic movies. Our one regret is she died the day before her absentee ballot arrived, but her prayers for the future of this nation as well as her all her family members were fervent and genuine, and her trust in Jesus Christ sustained her through many of life's trials.
Born June 20, 1928, to Henry Castellaw and Ethel Adams Witt, Marion had many happy memories made in the company of her maternal grandmother Molly Hutcheson Adams Palmer. A proud 1945 graduate of Montgomery County High School (then in Kibbee), she attended Berry College in Rome, GA. She was the baby sister to Hazel Witt Collins (Tom), Earl Witt (Frances), and Ethlyn Witt Durden (Bill), all of whom predeceased her.
After World War II ended, Marion married George Lennon Wilkes of Higgston, the father of her two sons. After his death in 1978, she eventually remarried and was widowed twice, to Eston Daniels and then to Grable Hutcheson. Throughout this time, she was an industrious homemaker, and enjoyed raising her sons within blocks of her siblings and their families, which was a blessed, simple time compared to today's hectic and scattered world. She enjoyed being a part for many years of both, the Higgston Women's Club and the Ailey Garden Club, as well as enumerable Bible studies, and other church-affiliated functions.
Marion was known for her fig preserves, her homegrown scuppernong jelly, ambrosia at Christmas, and anything with pecans. She had a true artistic ability, creating original paintings and homemade quilts, which are dear to the family. When not maintaining her home and properties, she enjoyed respites of time spent with family and friends throughout the southeast, Alaska, and a special trip with her son Craig to England and Scotland for the 450th anniversary celebration of the writing of the Westminster Confession of Faith.
Marion is survived by her firstborn son, the Reverend Lennon "Craig" Wilkes and his wife, Vicki Wingate Wilkes, and their two children George Craig Wilkes and Susannah Kate Wilkes. She is also survived by her son Steven Glen Wilkes and his two children Kenneth Steven Wilkes and Shelly Wilkes Pruitt, and Shelly's children Chloe, Gia, Summer, and Easton Pruitt. Many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and their extended families also not only survive her, but shared her final days, and sustained her in many and special ways. We rejoice in her legacy of faith, love, and charity.
