Mr. Joseph E. “Chip” Killingsworth, age 77, of Higgston, died Friday morning near his home from an accident. He was born in Dublin on October 6, 1946, to the late Alton Lewis Killingsworth and Myrtle Sweat Killingsworth. He grew up in Dudley, later moving to Dublin and was a 1964 graduate of Dublin High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Vietnam War. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Math and Economics from Mercer University in Macon, and a Master’s and an Education Specialist (Ed.S), both from Georgia Southern University in Statesboro. He retired after thirty years as a teacher from Montgomery Correctional Institute in Mt. Vernon, taught at Brewton-Parker College for seventeen years, and taught classes at Hunter Army Air Field and Ft. Stewart through Central Texas College. He was a member of Mt. Olive Old Line Primitive Baptist Church in Wilkinson County. He enjoyed working in his yard, traveling, and his annual fishing trip to Santee Cooper Lake. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a son-in-law, Jay Morris; one sister, Beth Powell; and five brothers, Alton “Doc”, John “Jack”, Benjamin, Charles, and Gene Killingsworth.
His family includes his wife of fifty-three years, Sharon West Killingsworth of Higgston; two children, Nikolaos “Nik” Kodros of Shellman Bluff, and Stella K. Morris of Higgston; four grandchildren, Sara Morris and husband Charlie of the Kibbee Community, Zac Morris of Higgston, Zannis Kodros and Lizabelle Kodros, both of Amelia Island, Florida; two great-grandchildren, Zoey Morris and Jay Morris; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.
The funeral service will be Tuesday afternoon, September 24th, at 3:00 in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Pastor ML Barber and John Herndon officiating. Burial will follow at Ferguson Cemetery.
