Jimmy Coursey Obituary

Mr. Jimmy Coursey, age 76, of Lyons, died Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at Meadows Park Health and Rehab in Vidalia after an extended illness.  He was a lifelong resident of Toombs County, living in Lyons most of his life, and he was a 1966 graduate of Lyons High School.  He served in the Army National Guard as a Staff Sergeant for six years.  He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Theology from Free Will Baptist Church Bible College in Nashville, Tennessee, and was ordained as a minister in 1974.  He pastored at Corinth Free Will Baptist Church Tift County, Empire Free Will Baptist Church in Bleckley County, and Swainsboro Free Will Baptist Church.  He was a charter member of Lyons Free Will Baptist Church.  He was owner/operator of Coursey Construction for ten years, and worked seven years as superintendent with Florin Daniels Construction Company.  He worked with General Communications as contractor superintendent in communication/construction, worked at Vidalia Carpet Center, and was an industrial supervisor with the Toombs County Road Department.  He enjoyed fishing, reading his Bible, loving on his grandchildren, and witnessing to others wherever he went.  He is preceded in death by his wife of forty-eight years, Diane Hamilton Coursey; grandson, Duncan Coursey; and parents, Brooks Coursey and Queen Elizabeth Moseley Coursey. 

His family includes five children, Alan Coursey and wife Tanya of the Rackettown Community, Melanie Coursey Powell and husband Chad of the Kibbee Community, Nathan Coursey and wife Amy of Rackettown, Kelly Coursey and wife Kristen of the Marvin Yancey Community, and Heather Coursey Jackson and husband Will of Baxley; one sister, Martha Lou Wilson of Lyons; seventeen grandchildren, Meagan Brinson and husband Justin, Brooke O’Steen and husband Will, Amanda Griffin and husband Jordan, Shelby Coursey, Cullen Coursey, Carsen Coursey, Emmalee Coursey, Trevor Coursey, Brooks Coursey, Dustin Coursey and wife Caroline, Dilan Coursey and wife Megan, Hannah Coursey Smith and husband Jake, Haiden Jackson, Jailyn Jackson, Braiden Jackson, and Raelyn Jackson; and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.

The funeral service will be Monday morning, October 23rd, at 11:00 at Lyons Free Will Baptist Church with his son-in-law, Pastor Will Jackson and his nephew, Pastor Rick Wilson officiating.  Burial will follow at McDonald Cemetery with his grandson, Dilan Coursey officiating.
