Jeannette Moore Obituary

Jeannette Susan McDonald Moore passed away in her home on March 21, 2025 from an extended illness. She was born July 19, 1944, in Moultrie, Georgia, during World War II while her parents were stationed at Spence Army Airfield.

Jeannette grew up in Montgomery County, Georgia, before moving to Milledgeville, Georgia, in 1957.  She played basketball for Baldwin High School and cheered for Georgia Military College.  She was Miss Milledgeville Debutante in 1958 and graduated from Baldwin High School in 1962. She attended the University of Georgia, Georgia State College, and graduated from Women’s College of Georgia in 1965.  She married Samuel Thomas Moore, “Tommy” in 1962, and they moved to Texas, Mississippi, Virginia, Washington State, Boston, Atlanta, and Tampa before settling back in Vidalia in 1981. Jeannette worked as an elementary teacher and tutor and later received her master’s in education from Georgia Southern College in 1985.

Her main purpose and joy in life came in her role as a wife, mother, and homemaker. She was an excellent cook, especially of her famous chocolate chip cookies. She loved being “Nettie” to her seven grandchildren, and she focused on their educations and helping them succeed in the “three Rs” reading, writing, and arithmetic from a young age. She was “her family’s cheerleader” and their biggest fan in every athletic, artistic and academic pursuit, and especially loved watching them run and play basketball. She helped her husband, Tom, teach the Caring and Sharing Sunday School class at First Baptist Church of Vidalia for over 40 years and had a personal ministry of writing encouraging notes to everyone she encountered.

She was preceded in death by her father, Bobby Ralph McDonald and her mother Claudia Ladson McDonald.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Samuel Thomas Moore. Also surviving a son and family, Geoffrey Thomas Moore and Dr. Kara Griffin Moore, Griffin Thomas Moore and Pierce Victoria Moore; a daughter and family, Jennifer Moore Lucas, Barry Prestwood Lucas, Robert Samuel Lucas and Thomas Chapman Lucas; a daughter and family, Dr. Susanna Moore Meredith, Thomas Gray Meredith, Georgia Angeline Meredith, Claudia Margaret Meredith and Virginia Gray Meredith; one sister and family, April McDonald Chambers, Jerry Chambers, Sherri Chambers and Kammi Chambers Updyke.

The funeral service will be Wednesday afternoon, March 26th, 2025, at 3:00 in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend Gady Youmans and Reverend Don Moye officiating.  Burial will follow at Tarrytown City Cemetery.
