Mr. Jack E. Caves, age 88, of Vidalia, died Sunday, November 9, 2025, at his home following an extended illness. He was born on March 4, 1937, in Homestead, Florida to the late William Bunnie Caves, Jr. and Grace Virginia Rayburn Caves. He was a 1955 graduate of South Dade High School in Homestead where he was captain of the golf team, and he played football. After high school, Mr. Caves worked with the Florida Department of Agriculture and with a local chemical company in Homestead. He moved to Toombs County in 1970, and later began a career in law enforcement, working as dispatcher, detective, serving as Lyons Police Chief on three different occasions, and after retirement was a bailiff at the courthouse with the Toombs County Sheriff’s Department. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Vidalia, past Master of Royal Palm Lodge #100 in Homestead where recently was awarded his 60 years apron, and was a member of Alee Shrine in Savannah. He enjoyed offshore fishing, diving for sea turtles and clams, deer hunting in the Everglades, deer and elk hunting out west with his son-in-law, Wayne, and playing and watching golf. Above everything, he learned to love, value, and appreciate his family more and more.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Norma Becker Caves of Vidalia; three children, Wayne Mattson Caves and wife Kim of Cartersville, Wendy Caves Pearson and husband Wayne of Valdosta, and Shawn Caves McLemore and husband Bill of Vidalia; five grandchildren, Jonathan Caves and wife Brandi, Tricia Caves Clark and husband Devin, all of Cartersville, Morgan Pearson Stone and husband Tanner of Valdosta, Chandler Pearson of Manhattan, New York, and Hunter McLemore and wife Taylor of Vidalia; three great-grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren to be born soon.
