Mr. Hugh Dees Grace, age 92, of the Cedar Crossing Community, died Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at his home following an extended illness. He was born September 2, 1931, to the late Ben Grace and Birdie Dees Gibbs. He was a resident of Toombs County all of his life, a 1950 graduate of Toombs Central School, and he attended South Georgia State College for two years. He worked twenty years in the Merchant Marines with Exxon Mobil on an oil tanker, and during his career, he traveled around the world three times. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially fishing at the Altamaha River. He was well known as “Sleepy” at the Altamaha, and was always willing and available to help anyone in need. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Pierce Arnold “P.A.” Grace.
His family includes his wife of sixty-one years, Elizabeth Beasley Grace of Cedar Crossing; two children, Michelle Grace Harrison and husband Heath of Griffin, and Calvin Grace of Cedar Crossing and Tosha; three grandchildren, Skye Brand and husband Jake, Lillian Grace, and Madelyn Grace, and a great-grandson to be born soon; one brother, James Gibbs and wife Alisha of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening, November 3rd from 6:00 until 8:00.
The funeral service will be Saturday afternoon, November 4th, at 3:00 in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Pastor Melvin Kramer officiating. Burial will follow at Grace Family Cemetery in Cedar Crossing.
