Hubert B. Sowell

Mr. Hubert B. Sowell, age 83, of the Ohoopee Community, died Saturday, June 27, 2026, at the Community Hospice House in Vidalia following an extended illness. He was born in Vidalia on August 6, 1942, to the late Jimmie Carroll “J.C.” Sowell and Anna Laura Poole Sowell. He attended Lyons High School and served nine years in the U.S. Navy as hospital corpsman attached to Special Forces of the U.S. Marines. Following his service, he was a general superintendent for several companies during his career, building hospitals, apartments, and hotels throughout the southeast. He was a member of Inman Creek Masonic Lodge #491 in Johnson Corner and Oasis Church of God where served on the church council and was Men’s Fellowship Leader. He enjoyed vegetable gardening, cutting with his tractor, horses and horseback riding. His love for our God, his family and church was foremost important to him. Hubert’s renowned saying to family and friends was, “I’m a pretty man, and I do pretty work”

In addition to his parents, he was a preceded in death by three siblings, Kenneth Scott Sowell, Carolyn Ann Sowell, and an infant brother; and two sisters-in-law, Mollie Burke Sowell and Connie Thigpen Sowell.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-one years, Dianne Craft Sowell; four children, Lyn Sowell Dixon of Gainesville, Florida, Melanie Sowell Alig and husband Tony of Alpharetta, Jamie Sowell Schneller and husband Chuck of Haynesville, and Brad Sowell and wife Lisa of Evans; one brother, Jerry Sowell of Vidalia; seven grandchildren, Heather Irvan, Ashlei Davis, Taylor Alig, Tiffani Powers, Colt Schneller, Nick Clark, and Ashton Sowell; eight great-grandchildren, bonus children and grandchildren, David and Trina Guthrie and Tiffany and Chad Guthrie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday morning, June 30th, 2026, at 11:00 in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Bishop Gilbert Wommack officiating. Interment will follow at Ohoopee Community Cemetery with Pastor Josh May.
