Hoyt Summers "Summy" Pittman, Jr., age 66, passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024 after an extended illness. A lifelong resident of the English Eddy Community, Summy was a man of many talents. He began farming when he was just a child, working on the family farm and later buying more farm land to help grow the family business. Back in the old days, one of teen-aged Summy's favorite things to do was frog gigging, but later he preferred fishing. In school, he was on the basketball and track teams. Summy was valedictorian of Robert Toombs Christian Academy's graduation class of 1976 and attended ABAC in Tifton. For a while, he was a local TV personality as co-host of a community forum on TV 46. Summy was one of the original members of the Cedar Crossing Volunteer Fire Department. He served as chairman of the Toombs County Elections Board for a time, as well as being a member of the county equalization board and a member of the Toombs County Republican Party. He was active in Young Farmers once, winning the farming management test twice. One of his hobbies was designing and drawing house plans. Bowling was another hobby, and he was once a member of a competitive bowling team. Traveling was a hobby he shared with his wife, Sheila, and they traveled to Italy as much as possible. He was a real renaissance man, finding solutions to a myriad of problems when friends and family needed help. He was known for his knowledge and stories passed down by oral tradition in his family. Summy was a born again Christian and attended English Eddy Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hoyt and Betty Rae Pittman. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Sheila; son, Summers (Dan) Pittman; daughter, Addy (Daniel) Baker; granddaughters, Tilly, Brynn and Maryn Baker; his sisters, Teresa (George) Miller and Maria Pittman, and many numerous loved ones who will miss him dearly.
