Mr. Homer Blake Lewis, Jr., age 89, of Vidalia, died Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at Memorial Health Meadows Hospital after a sudden illness. He was a native of Horry County, South Carolina, growing up in Conway, South Carolina. He was a 1952 graduate of Conway High School and a 1972 graduate of John A. Gupton School of Funeral Service in Nashville, Tennessee. He served eight years in the United States Air Force and was stationed in England. While in the Air Force, he earned the Air Force Longevity Service Award, National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He moved to Brunswick in 1963 and ultimately made Toombs County his home in 1973. Homer worked as an embalmer and funeral director for Trapnell-Jones Funeral Home, Murchison Funeral Home and more recently, Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home. He worked in the funeral profession for over 50 years and served over 8,000 families. He was also a licensed insurance agent and worked with United Family Life Insurance Company, multiple times led the state in company sales, and was in the “Million Dollar Club”. He attended St. Matthews Church of God, where he and his wife were the church custodians for many years.
He enjoyed walking, reading, exercising and talking to people. He was also a fan of both Vidalia and Toombs County Football, but he especially loved all things baseball, including having his very own “Field of Dreams” baseball field at home. He is preceded in death by his granddaughter, Lindsey Brooke Knight; parents, Homer Blake Lewis, Sr. and Beulah Jones Lewis; and siblings, Virginia Lewis Sessions, Mary Faye Lewis Johnson, Tema Lewis Causey and Erie Lewis.
His family includes his wife of fifty-nine years, Faye Harrison Lewis of Vidalia; three children, Robbie Lewis of Conway, South Carolina, Jennifer Lewis Knight and Jimmy Cowart of Toombs Central, and Blake Lewis and wife Ginger of Waycross; one sister, Margie Lewis Curry and Bobby Meadows of Dan, Virginia; four grandchildren, Cayla Knight Achenbach and husband Cody of Titusville, Florida, Carra Knight Zambetti and husband Michael of St. Simons Island, Evan Lewis and Easton Lewis, both of Waycross; four great-grandchildren, Jackson Achenbach, John Luke Achenbach, Gemma Zambetti and Roman Zambetti; numerous nieces and nephews; friend and caregiver, Tosha Rhymes; and longtime friend and colleague, Ronald Hall.
A family graveside service was held on Friday, August 4th, at Lakeview Memorial Gardens with Reverend David Blalock officiating.
