Mr. Harold L. Norton, born October 16, 1925, died at his home, 988 Providence Church Road, on March 15, 2020. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Burtie L. Norton, and is survived by his two daughters, Judy Shank (Joe) and Dianne Norton, a granddaughter, Hilary, and two great-grandchildren.
Throughout the bulk of his career, Mr. Norton worked as a manager for the A&P grocery chain, first in Savannah and then in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. He was a beloved “boss” to many employees. After moving to Toombs County, he enjoyed managing gas and food markets in Lyons and Vidalia. During the many years he was an active member at Providence Baptist Church, he delighted in discussing the meaning of Scripture passages and the Second Coming.
Throughout his life, his favorite after-work activities included time with his family, fishing, and gardening. He was the consummate caregiver to his wife in her final years. Despite limitations with eyesight and hearing, he thanked God daily for his life, found joy in simple pleasures, and was determined to live his life as fully as possible in his home.
Special thanks go to each caregiver who enabled Mr. Norton to remain in his home till he died: Faye Culp, Sonia Fincher, Darlene Lockwood, Arlene Jones, Karen Kerk, Leslie Cox, Terri Powell, Sheila James, Evelyn Smith, and Trina Coleman.
Special thanks to Scott and Gail Howell for their attention and care. They were a huge part of Dad's life for decades. The extra special love and kindness they showed to him in the final days of his life are deeply appreciated.
A graveside service was held Friday, March 20th, at 10:00 a.m. in the Providence Baptist Church Cemetery with Pastor Robert Ferrell officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to Providence Baptist Church, 982 Providence Missionary Church Road, Lyons, Georgia, 30436, may be given.
