Mr. Gilbert Y. Anderson, age 99, of the English Eddy Community, died Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at Meadows Park Health & Rehab in Vidalia after a brief illness. He was a native of Toombs County, grew up in the Toombs Central Community, and attended Johnson Corner School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, joining in April of 1945. He was deployed to the Pacific Theater, and soon after the war ended, he spent the remainder of his service in Korea. He was a Staff Sergeant, the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal, Army Occupation Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal. After his military service, Mr. Anderson returned to Toombs County and farmed for several years. In the early 1950s, he moved to Savannah, retiring from Union Camp Box Plant after thirty-nine years, before returning to Toombs County in 1988. He was an active member of Hardens Chapel Church and cooked breakfast at the church before Sunday school. He had previously served on the Hardens Chapel Cemetery Committee. He enjoyed quail and coon hunting, fishing at Cobb Creek, gardening, reading, especially his Bible, and word search.
He is preceded in death by two wives, Grace Wiggins Anderson and Dean O’Neal Anderson; son, Daniel Anderson; parents, Daniel Wright Anderson and Minnie Underwood Anderson; and nine siblings, Myrtice, Clyde, Wilbur, Harris, Claude, Garland, and Sanford Anderson, Lucile Anderson Perry, and Nellie Anderson Hogan.
He is survived by one son, Allen Anderson and wife Linda of Blackshear; daughter-in-law, Linda Williams Anderson of Middleburg, Florida; five grandchildren, Alex Anderson and wife Chanda of Blackshear, Stephanie Anderson Wegmann and husband Randall of Guyton, Tina Anderson, Tracy Anderson Brown and husband Andy, and Tammy Wright, all of Middleburg; eighteen great-grandchildren, ten great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday morning, February 14th, 2026, at 11:00 at Hardens Chapel Church with Reverend Bill Lee officiating. Interment will follow at Hardens Chapel Cemetery with military honors by the U.S. Army Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at Hardens Chapel Church from 10:00 until just prior to the service.
Pallbearers are Cody Brown, Jacob Brown, Garrett Brown, Alex Anderson, Austin Wegmann, and Hunter Nunn.
Honorary pallbearers are Jerome Toole, Curtis Carter, Billy Carter, Joe Lillard, Rick Johnson, and Jimmy Cowart.
