Mr. George W. “GW” Dykes, age 88, passed away peacefully, Wednesday morning, October 18, 2023, at Community Hospice in Vidalia. George was born on November 27, 1934 and grew up in Montgomery County. After living in various places in the south, his family moved to Long Pond when he was around ten years old, and he lived there until his early twenties. George was baptized at Long Pond Baptist Church and graduated from Montgomery County High School in 1952. After graduation, George began working with Oxford Industries in Vidalia. He married his loving wife, Lucille Strickland, in March 1957 at Rock Springs Holiness Baptist Church. George served in the United States Army for two years of active duty, primarily in Frankfort, Germany. He retired from Oxford Industries in 2003 after working 50 years. George was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church and enjoyed being a member of the Ready Men Sunday School Class. He enjoyed gardening, jigsaw puzzles, computer games, and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. George is preceded in death by his son, Alan Dwayne Dykes; his parents, George W. Dykes, Sr. and Nancy Cleo Copeland Dykes; a sister, Anna Louise Little; and a brother, Thomas J. Dykes.
His family includes his wife of 66 years, Lucille Dykes of Vidalia; one daughter, Vickie Dykes Randazza and husband Mark of South Carolina; six grandchildren including, Andrew (Drew) Randazza and wife Olivia of North Carolina, Alexandra (Allie) Randazza of South Carolina; one sister, Retha Willis of Baxley; one brother, Bobby Dykes of Johnson Corner; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home, Saturday morning, October 21, 2023, from 10:00 until just prior to the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. with Mr. Randy McDuffie officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeview Memorial Gardens with military honors.
