Mr. Garry Lee Adams, age 74, of Vidalia, died Monday, March 9, 2026, at the Community Hospice House in Vidalia following an extended illness. He was born in Vidalia on May 22, 1951, to the late Marvin Patrick Adams and Lottie Mae Powell Adams. He was a 1969 graduate of Vidalia High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Georgia Southern University. He graduated college on a Saturday and started to work the following Monday, and unknowingly, began a forty-two year career with the Vidalia Recreation Department, retiring in 2017, as assistant director. He was the founder of the Vidalia-Toombs Officials Association. He had several state championship titles while coaching with the Rec Department, including football, baseball, softball, girls and boys basketball, and track. Garry said many times, “You never work a day in your life, if you enjoy your job.” He also said his greatest legacy was his “girls” and grandchildren. He was a member of Vidalia Cornerstone Church, where he served as Sunday school superintendent, usher, and worked with the youth. Garry enjoyed golf, especially at Myrtle Beach, umpiring, and watching and supporting his grandchildren play sports. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Lisa Caves Adams.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Susan Blaxton Adams; three daughters, Whitney Adams Garrett and husband Jonathan, Sydney Adams Thigpen and husband Josh, and Caitlin Adams Moxley; one brother, Pat Adams and wife Gail; six grandchildren, Jolee Stone Garrett, Elijah Joshua Thigpen, Asher Adams Thigpen, Dawson Reed Moxley, Slate Billy Garrett, and Gracie Helen Moxley, all of Vidalia; two nephews and one niece.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday morning, March 13, 2026, at 11:00 at Vidalia Cornerstone Church with Josh Thigpen and Reverend Jose Caraballo officiating.
The family will receive friends at Cornerstone Church on Friday morning from 9:00 until just prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the City of Vidalia-Darby Gym/Garry Adams Memorial, PO Box 280, Vidalia, GA 30475.
