Mrs. Evelyn Darden Herring, age 81, of Lyons, died Thursday, August 1, 2024, at the Community Hospice House in Vidalia, following an extended illness. She was born March 24, 1943 in Toombs County, to the late Johnnie Darden and Geneva Curl Darden. She was a lifelong resident of Toombs County, and she worked at Oxford Industries for thirty-five years, and several years at Meridy’s and Meredith Industries in Vidalia. She was Baptist by faith. She was an avid bowler and member of the Elite Turtle League. She enjoyed fishing, sewing, and growing flowers. She is preceded in death by a son, Terry L. Phillips; and seven siblings, Johnny Green Darden, Jr., James Henry “Jim” Darden, Billy Darden, Jeanette Darden, Daisy M. Darden Beasley, Rosa Lee “Rose” Darden Powell, an infant sister, Sally Darden; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Richard S. Herring, Sr. and Mary Hodges Herring.
Her family includes her husband of forty-eight years, Richard S. Herring, Jr.; one son, Glenn Phillips and wife Kathy of Vidalia; two grandchildren, Jennifer Phillips of Vidalia and Jessica Phillips of Lyons; three great-grandchildren, Macy Strickland, Ariel Sikes and Bryton Sikes; one brother, Jackie Darden and Miriam of Vidalia, one sister, Christine Dasher and husband Mark of Reidsville; one sister-in-law, Marilyn Darden of Lyons; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00, and at other times, the family will assemble at the residence of the son, Glenn Phillips, 2001 Rossway Drive, Vidalia.
A graveside funeral service will be Saturday morning, August 3rd, at 10:00 at Pine Crest Cemetery with Pastor Buddy Toole and Pastor Tracy Todd officiating.
