Mr. Ernest LeRoy “Ernie” Davis, age 75, of Wheeler County, Georgia, died Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at The Rosewood at Ft. Oglethorpe after an extended illness. He was born in Texarkana, grew up in Dallas, Texas and was a 1967 graduate of Highland Park High School in Dallas, Texas. He moved to Houston, Texas in 1972 and worked for Hydrotech, where he excelled as an underwater welder in the Gulf of America. He met his wife Debbie in Houston and they both moved to Wheeler County in 1979 to escape the big city. He started his own company, Davis Exterior Construction Incorporated, which he owned and operated for thirty years. He was a member of the Vidalia First United Methodist Church, now Cornerstone Church, where he sang in the choir, and often played guitar during special occasions. He coached his son’s baseball and football teams at the Vidalia Recreation Department, served as Scout Master for the Hazlehurst Boy Scouts, and taught guitar lessons in his retirement years. Ernie enjoyed planting and gardening, was passionate about sports, and seized every opportunity to hunt with his loved ones. He was an excellent cook, both in the kitchen and on the grill, and enjoyed the opportunity to share food with others. His parents, Eldon Leon Davis and June Vernice Higgs Davis; and an infant brother, Danny Leon Davis, precede him in death.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Debbie Gray Davis of Wheeler County; his son, Christopher Lee Davis and wife Ivy; three grandchildren, Grayson Tate Davis, Dawson Michael Lee Davis, and Emilie June Davis, all of Chickamauga, Georgia; one sister, Cassandra “Sandra” Davis Nobles and husband Phillip; one brother, Frederick Glen Davis, all of Bryan, Texas; and several nieces and nephews that he dearly loved.
