Eloise Pope Obituary

Mrs. Eloise Pope, age 91, of Glenwood, died Saturday, May 24, 2025, at her daughter’s home following an extended illness.  She was a native of Wheeler County, living near Glenwood all of her life, and she attended Shiloh School.  She retired from Oxford Industries after thirty years, and she was a member of the Glenwood Church of God.  She enjoyed cooking, baking chocolate cakes, which was her specialty, putting up vegetables, going to the mountains, gospel music, and attending all night gospel sings in Waycross.  She is preceded in death by her husband, James Leon Pope, Sr.; son, Jimmy Pope; parents, Colon Hughes and Omer Dixon Hughes; aunt and uncle who raised her, Bill and Clora Clark; and a sister, Carolyn Dixon.

Eloise Pope, MaMa, was more than just a wife, mother, grandmother, or friend. She was the heartbeat of her family, a stalwart figure of faith and love, and the most selfless woman her family has ever known. MaMa was also an exemplar of selfless love in marriage. Tenderly caring for Papa Leon through the years, living out the words “till death do us part,” and holding his memory through her years without him.

MaMa was also an excellent friend, maintaining several friendships for decades. Getting a call through to her from 6-9 p.m. was always challenging because she usually talked to Margaret Oswalt, her best friend of 90 years, checked on her cousins, and shared the love of Christ with each person blessed to know her. Eloise Pope was more than simple words can express. She was the embodiment of love, hope, peace, and patience. She held gentleness in her hands, joy in her heart, and faithfulness in her words. For these reasons and many more, Eloise lives on in her family's memory, love, and actions. They await the day they will join her in her eternal reward when they reunite in Heaven on some happy day.

Her family includes one daughter, Elna Pope Butler; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Pope Saxon and husband Ronny, all of Glenwood; three grandchildren, Craig Butler and wife Melondy, William Pope and wife Starlit, all of Glenwood, and Brent Pope and wife Sabrina of Alston; eleven great-grandchildren, Brandon Pope and wife Heather, Hannah Leyland and husband Josh, Taylor McLoon and husband Logan, Ty Butler and fiancée Hannah Dean, Noah Pope and wife Stella, Hali Pope, Holly Pope, Trent Butler, Nick Pope, Brad Pope, and Brent Pope, Jr.; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be Wednesday afternoon, May 28th, 2025, at 3:00 in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Pastor William Pope and Pastor Ronny Saxon officiating.  Burial will follow at Glenwood City Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday afternoon from 1:00 until just prior to the service.

Pallbearers are Brandon Pope, Ty Butler, Noah Pope, Trent Butler, Nick Pope, and Brad Pope.

Flowers are welcomed, or memorial donations can be made to the Glenwood Church of God, PO Box 185, Glenwood, GA 30428.
