Mrs. Eleanor Maddox Smith, age 84, of Vidalia, died January 24, 2025, at Ogeechee Area Hospice after an extended illness. She was a native of Wheeler County, Georgia and a graduate of Wheeler County High School. Eleanor spent a majority of her life taking care of her family and supporting her husband who was a pastor and an evangelist. She was known for her musical talents which included singing, playing piano and playing the organ. She enjoyed cooking, reading, crossword puzzles and spending time with her family. She is preceded in death by her husband, Reverend Jimmy R. Smith; father, William Nathan (Sam) Maddox; mother, Katherine (Kate) Butler Maddox and daughter-in-law Cathy Pope Smith. Eleanor is undoubtedly praising God with them now.
Her family includes two sons, Reese Smith of Cochran, GA and Danny Smith of Vidalia, GA, one daughter, Vonda McDonald (Charles) of Springfield, Georgia; three grandsons Chad Smith of Cochran, GA, Nathan McDonald (Lisa) of Evans, GA, and Adam McDonald, (fiancé Kaylee) of Portal, GA; as well as one granddaughter Kelli Smith Bass (Rocky) of Cochran, GA; four great-grandchildren, Austin, Kinley, Adeline, and Gideon; three sisters, Shirley Lee (Jack) of Eastman, GA, Latrell Thompson of Glenwood, GA and Jane Foskey (Fred) of Alston, GA; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Sarah White and Danny Altman officiating. Burial will follow at Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery, Wheeler County.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Monday, January 27, 2025.
Pallbearers are Fred Lee, Tommy Caraway, Clay Caraway, Greg Yawn, Richie Smith, Rodney Smith, Joe Smith, Jr., and Dave Smith.
