Edith Newham Obituary

Mrs. Edith Gordon Newham, age 82, of Uvalda, died Saturday, July 11, 2020, in Meadows Health of Vidalia, after an extended illness.  She was a lifelong resident of Uvalda and was a 1955 graduate of Ailey-Mt. Vernon High School.  She was payroll clerk for Piggly Wiggly Southern in Vidalia and also worked with Alva Jones as an accountant for many years.  In 1974, she founded Newham Tax Service in Uvalda and was a member of the Uvalda Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Nancy Elaine Downie; parents, A.T. “Trick” Gordon and Nola Mae Caraway Gordon; and three brothers, C.F. Gordon, Ronnie Gordon and Joe Wayne Gordon.

Mrs. Newham is survived by her husband of forty-two years, Bobby Joe Newham of Uvalda; three children, Lynn Downie of Mitchell, and Leigh Downie and Benson Downie of Uvalda; one brother, Tommy Gordon and wife Dorothy of Alston; three grandchildren, Whitney Harmon of Bacon County, Gordon Downie and wife Whitney, and Chellie Downie, all of Vidalia; four great-grandchildren, Jadelynn Disharoon, Jessica Bennett, Emma Downie and Jaxson Harmon; and several nieces and nephews.

A private graveside funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 14th, at 10:00 a.m. in the Uvalda City Cemetery with Pastor Reece Mincey officiating.
