Mrs. Dorothy Murphy, age 84, of Lyons, passed away Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at Memorial Health Meadows Hospital in Vidalia after an extended illness. She was born in Bleckley County and grew up in Colquitt County. She married her husband, who was in the military, and they lived in Germany during his time in the service. She later lived in Colquitt County and Miller County before they moved to Toombs County in 1982. She was a general merchandise manager with Piggly Wiggly in Moultrie for a few years and was a homemaker. She enjoyed cross-stitching and sewing. She was a member of Marietta Free Will Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for both children and adults, and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. She was a devoted prayer warrior and served faithfully as a pastor’s wife for forty-five years. Dorothy was a loving and humble wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to many. Her legacy of selfless service blessed many lives. Her love and passion for children has built an army of Godly men, women and youth that love God as fiercely as she did. Her legacy lives on through the lives of those she touched so beautifully. She is preceded in death by her son, Phil Murphy; grandson, Chane Crumpton; parents, John Robert Wynne and Willie Frances Coody Wynne; and two brothers, Randall Wynne and Jimmy Wynne.
She leaves behind her loving husband of sixty-five years, Reverend Irvin Murphy of Lyons; two children, Pastor Ken Murphy and wife Ann of Vidalia, and Sharon M. Crumpton of Baxley; daughter-in-law, Katrina Murphy; three grandchildren, Dr. Jonathan Murphy of Vidalia, Casey Griffin and husband Justin of Baxley, and Ashley Murphy of Ghana; three great-grandchildren, Ryald Griffin, Cormick Griffin, and Dane Griffin as well as countless adopted grandchildren and great-grandchildren that she lovingly poured herself into.
The family will receive friends at Marietta Free Will Baptist Church on Saturday morning, November 18th, from 10:00 until just prior to the funeral service at 12:00 noon with Pastor Curtis Alligood and Reverend Chris Clark officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeview Memorial Gardens.
For those unable to attend the service on Saturday, there will be opportunity for friends to pay their respects at the funeral home on Friday afternoon from 1:00 until 5:00.
