Mr. David K. Burns, age 80, of Soperton, died Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at his home following an extended illness. He was a native of Montgomery County and grew up in the Long Pond Community. He lived in Texas, Alabama, Kentucky, and Atlanta for a few years, returning to Long Pond in 1972, and has made Soperton his home since 2018. Earlier in his life, he farmed with his brother-in-law, James Fowler, and retired after forty-three years as a long-haul truck driver. He attended Long Pond Church. David enjoyed fishing and camping with his wife at Lake Oconee.
He is preceded in death by his wife of fifty-seven years, Carolyn Ann Hammond Burns; parents, Edward Duren Burns, Sr. and Glenzie Ola Gibbs Burns; his precious grandmother, Margaret Bane Gibbs; one brother, Edward Duren Burns, Jr.; and two sisters, Mable Colleen Burns Wright and Mattie Glenda Burns Richardson.
Mr. Burns is survived by one son, Duren Burns and wife Jackie of the Center Community; two sisters, Sylvia Burns Fowler of Long Pond and Ann Burns of Glenwood; two step-grandchildren, Kevin Phillips of Toombs Central and Kelly Phillips Maybin and husband Michael of Eatonton; two step-great-grandchildren, Ryleigh Phillips and Sawyer Maybin; one step-great-great-grandson, Wyatt Phillips; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Saturday afternoon, February 21st, 2026, at 1:00 at Gibbs Family Cemetery in Long Pond with Pastor Ricky Dyal officiating.
The family will receive friends at the cemetery on Saturday from 12:00 noon until just prior to the service.
