Mr. Daniel Lee “Scrap Iron” Wood, age 73, of New Branch Community, passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2022, in his home surrounded by friends and family. He passed away after an extended illness under the care of Community Hospice.
Scrap was born in Hazlehurst, Georgia in January of 1949 and spent his childhood in Florida with his family. He returned to Georgia at the age of 26, met and married the love of his life, Charlene, and settled in Toombs County to start a family. Daniel was a resident of Toombs County for 48 years. He was an accomplished electrician for most of his adult life, but after becoming partially disabled in an accident in 2006, he developed a deep relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ and began to spread His Gospel. Along with his church family at Mt. Moriah Church, Daniel helped to lead people to Jesus through multiple ministries, including Kairos, Hooked on Jesus, and Mt. Moriah Missions. He loved fishing and hunting, believed you should only have one dog at a time to be truly bonded, but most of all, he loved his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and adored and loved his grandchildren. Preceding him in death was his mother, Alice Ginwright; his father, Morris Wood; a brother, Lonnie Wood; and a sister, Jeanette Merrit.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Charlene Cox Wood and three daughters, Dana Wood (Laramie) of Maryland, Jessica Wood Conner (Lee) of Baxley, and Melissa Wood Gibbs (Randall) of Augusta; his ten grandchildren, J.D. Braddy, Gracie Braddy, Davis Howell, Caleb Howell, Lillian Gibbs, Charlee Blaxton, Brenna Howell, Charlotte Gibbs, Abram Darden and Flynn Conner; one great-grandson, Jayden Braddy; five sisters, Martha Willis and Barbara Thiel of Uvalda, Linda (Kelly) Albritton, Annette Smith and Gerrell Patsourakis of Bowling Green, Florida; two former sons-in-law, Scott Howell of Odum, Georgia and Paul Blaxton of Maryland; a special caregiver, Mary Edwards; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Friday, May 27th, at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Moriah Church in New Branch with Pastor Michael Kennedy officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery located on the grounds.
The family will receive friends and loved ones at the church from 10:00 a.m. until just prior to the service.
Flowers are accepted, or memorial donations may be made to Community Hospice Foundation, PO Box 2277, Vidalia, GA 30475 or Mt. Moriah Church, c/o Jane Riner, 685 Ernest Webber Rd., Lyons, GA 30436.
