Mr. Dan Mitchell, Sr. (USAFR) age 89, of Vidalia, died Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at his home following an extended illness. He was a native of the McGregor Community in Montgomery County and was a 1955 graduate of Montgomery County High School. Soon after graduating high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served ten years. He then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served ten more years, retiring in 1976 as a technical sergeant. He later moved to Toombs County, was owner of JDM Investments, and was a member of McGregor Presbyterian Church. He was an avid golfer and sports enthusiast.
He is preceded in death by his wife of sixty-three years, Geraldine Powell Mitchell; son, James Michael Way; parents, Attie Nevada Mitchell and Kathleen Jane Clark Mitchell; sister, Eva Jane Mitchell; and brother, Roy L. Mitchell.
Mr. Mitchell is survived by two sons, Clay Mitchell and wife Danette of Higgston, and John Mitchell, Jr. and wife Cindi of Lyons; seven grandchildren, Jacob Mitchell of the New Branch Community, Daniel Mitchell and wife Anna of the Kibbee Community, Jenessa Mitchell Cyree and husband Ike of Lyons, Cassidy Mitchell of Stark, Florida, Brittany Mitchell of Hinesville, Allie Mitchell of Vidalia, Adam Mitchell and wife Stephanie of Arizona; seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at 12:00 noon in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Pastor Brian Durden officiating. Private family interment will follow at Lakeview Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday morning from 11:00 until just prior to the service.
