Mt. Vernon,
Mr. W. Colon Sammons, age 78, of Mt. Vernon, died Tuesday, December 11, 2018, at Cedar Plantation in Metter, after an extended illness. He was a native of Uvalda and lived all of his life in Montgomery County. He was a 1958 graduate of Montgomery County High School, a graduate of Brewton-Parker College, and a 1965 graduate of Georgia Southern, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. He briefly taught Math at Jeff Davis High School in Hazlehurst, and from 1966 until 1971 served as Business Manager at Brewton-Parker. Colon started his banking career as a teller while in college, and in 1971, he assumed the position of Executive Vice-President at Mt. Vernon Bank. He served in that role until 1988, leaving there to assume the position of President/CEO/Director of Altamaha Bank & Trust and retired in 2013. He was a member of the Vidalia Rotary Club, a member the Board of Directors for the State YMCA, served as a Trustee at Brewton-Parker, was a charter member and Past-President of the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Montgomery County Development Authority. Until recently, Colon served as District Supervisor for the Ohoopee River Soil and Water Conservation, and was selected as Man of Year for Water and Soil Conservation. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Mt. Vernon where he taught Sunday school, and served as Deacon and Treasurer for more than forty years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude Colon Sammons and Mildred Rebecca Gibbs Sammons.
Mr. Sammons is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Linda Carter Sammons of Mt. Vernon; four sons, William Sammons and wife Holly of Duluth, Brent Sammons and wife Katy of Mt. Vernon, Brian Sammons of Bentonville, Arkansas, and Joel Sammons and wife Carrie of Suwanee; one sister, Melba Claxton of Ailey; three brothers, Bennie Sammons and wife Janice of Uvalda, Darrell Sammons and wife Susan of Shellman Bluff, and Jimmy Sammons and wife Mary of Glenwood; seven grandchildren, Cole, Carly, Chloe, Elliot, Lydia, Jonah, and Lucy; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Friday, December 14th at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Dr. Jim Whitlow and Reverend Karl Hay officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6:00 until 9:00.
