Mr. Benny H. Burke, age 74, of the Cedar Crossing Community, died Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at Wellstar MCG Health in Augusta, after an extended illness. He was a native of Toombs County, living in Cedar Crossing, and proudly on Delma Burke Road all of his life. He was a 1967 graduate of Toombs Central School, and served in the Army National Guard. For more than forty-five years, he was owner and operator of Burke Construction Company, building numerous houses in the area. He enjoyed farming, tinkering, and mostly spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. Preceding him in death was a son, “Little” Benny Burke; parents, Henry Edgar Burke and Elise Miller Burke; one brother, Gary Burke; and a sister, Mollie Burke Sowell.
His family includes his wife of forty-six years, Alexia Moseley Burke; two daughters, Allison Burke Gates and husband Jamey, and Alexis Burke Smith and husband Mark; four grandchildren, Jamison Gates, Taylor Hutcheson, Chance Smith, and Kenley Smith, all of Cedar Crossing; one brother-in-law, Jerry Sowell of Vidalia, and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside funeral service will be Wednesday afternoon October 2nd, at 4:00 at Smyrna Church Cemetery.
