Mr. Tommie Hollis Johnson, U.S.N. Retired, died Monday, February 18, 2019, in Augusta University Medical Center, after an extended illness. He was a native of Uvalda, and lived there until moving to Brunswick in 1944. In 1949, he entered the U.S. Navy and retired after twenty years of service. While in the Navy, he served on several submarines, including the S.S. Clamagore, S.S. Thomas Jefferson, S.S. Nathaniel Green, and the S.S. Sam Houston. He was stationed in several places, including South Carolina, Virginia and Mississippi. After retirement, he worked as a heavy equipment mechanic and has made Candler County his home since 1994. He attended Calvary on Aimwell in Vidalia, and enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carlie Johnson and Lizzie Inez Youmans; a son-in-law, J. Aaron Bridges; and brother, Carlton Johnson.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Jeannette D. Johnson of Metter; four children, Wayne T. Johnson of Aline, Carol Bridges Page and husband Charles, Barbara Lynn Johnson, all of Metter, and Angela G. Johnson of Adrian; one brother, H. Edward Johnson and wife Linda of Conley; nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Friday, February 22nd at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Pastor Efton Green officiating. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. in Ritch Baptist Church Cemetery near Screven in Wayne County with Tim Strickland officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 5:00 until 7:00.
