Vidalia,
Mr. Thomas Franklin “Tom” Caraway III, age 74, of Vidalia, died Saturday, June 8, 2019, in Oxley Park Health and Rehabilitation in Lyons, after an extended illness. He was a native of Toombs County, was a 1962 graduate of Vidalia High School, earned a Bachelor’s degree Criminal Justice from Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, and also was a graduate of Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service in Atlanta. Tom was a Marine veteran of the Vietnam War, and participated in the Cuban Missile Crisis. He retired from the Vidalia Post Office as a letter carrier after sixteen years, and retired again after twenty-five years as a science teacher in Tattnall County, working at Reidsville Middle School and Glennville Middle School. He was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church in Vidalia, the VFW, American Legion, and the Georgia Retired Teachers Association. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Franklin Caraway, Jr. and Evelyn Haskins Caraway.
Mr. Caraway is survived by two sons, Tommy F. Caraway and wife Mary Lou, and Clay Caraway and wife Jackie, all of Vidalia; four grandchildren, Carson Bacon of Vidalia, Samantha Mitchell and husband Tyler of Monroe, Kaci Caraway and Zach Caraway, both of Vidalia; two sisters, Nettie-Ruth Tiller of the Gray’s Landing Community, and Margaret Boaen of Vidalia; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 11th at 11:00 a.m. in the Pinecrest Cemetery. Military Honors by the Marine Corp will follow.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.
