SFC Jesse H. Pittman, USAR, age 90 of the English Eddy Community, died Tuesday, August 27, 2019, in the Community Hospice House in Vidalia, after a brief illness. He was a native of Toombs County, a 1946 graduate of Toombs Central High School and later earned an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from South Georgia College in Douglas. In 1950, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and fought in the Korean War and was the recipient of the Bronze Star with a V device for heroic combat achievement. He was a drill sergeant and combat engineer and retired from the Army as Sergeant First Class in 1970. After retirement, he worked as a correctional officer at Georgia State Prison in Reidsville and was a security officer at Edwin I. Hatch Plant. He was a hog farmer for many years, a member of the Hardens Chapel United Methodist Church and member and Past Commander of American Legion Post #97 in Vidalia. He was preceded in death by a son, John H. “Jay” Pittman; a grandson, Colby Meeks; parents, John Walker Pittman and Carrie Bell Burns Pittman; eight brothers, Clifford, Clyde, Felton, Billy, Richard, David, Hoyt, and Broadus Pittman; three sisters, Ossie Allen, Nadine Eddinger, and Betty Kuhn.
Jesse is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Betty Gibbs Pittman of English Eddy; four children, Lekeeta Sellers and husband Staten of Millen, Christopher Manthei and wife Debbie of Allen, Texas, Craig Pittman and wife Leslee, and Kim Meeks and husband Marc, all of Vidalia; ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Friday, August 30th, at 11:00 a.m. in the Hardens Chapel United Methodist Church with Reverend Jarrell Lillard, Reverend Carroll Gay and Reverend Melvin Kramer officiating. Burial will follow in the Hardens Chapel Cemetery with military honors.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.
