Vidalia,
Mrs. Melba W. Allen, age 93, of Vidalia, died Sunday, June 3, 2018, in the Community Hospice House in Vidalia, after an extended illness. She was a native of Montgomery County, and has lived in Vidalia most of her life. She was a 1942 graduate of Alston High School, and earned an Associate Degree from Brewton-Parker College in Mt. Vernon. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Georgia Teachers College in Statesboro, now Georgia Southern University, and a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Georgia. She began her teaching career in New Branch School, and taught first grade at Lyons Elementary School for thirty-two years. She was librarian at the elementary school in Vidalia, and was librarian at Robert Toombs Christian Academy for twenty-two years. She was a member of the Georgia Retired Teachers Association and the First Baptist Church of Vidalia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jemell “R.J.” Allen; parents, Wiley Wilkes and Florence Boyd Wilkes; one brother, Jack Wilkes; and a daughter-in-law, Ruth Hutcheson Allen.
Mrs. Allen is survived by three children, Larry Allen, Donna D. Hughes, and Stacy Boyd Allen, all of Vidalia; one brother, T.C. Wilkes and wife Carolyn of the Toombs Central Community; ten grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service will be held Monday, June 11th at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
