Maxwell Paul Thigpen, age 84, of Mt. Vernon, Georgia passed away on Wednesday, October 18, 2017.  Max was a lifelong resident of Montgomery County, a Korean War Veteran, and very proud father and grandfather.  He was very involved in local and state politics and was a former City Councilman for the city of Mt. Vernon.  He was actively involved for many years as a member of Calvary’s Grace Baptist Church, the Jaycees and the Mt. Vernon Masonic Lodge where he served as Worshipful Master.  Max retired after 50 years as owner of Max Barber Shop and cut (not styled) the hair of many generations of men in Montgomery and surrounding counties.   The barber shop was the local gathering place for political discussion, tall tales, and great stories by Mr. Max.  Max was preceded in death by his parents Louie and Missouri Thigpen and his three sisters and eight brothers.  He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years Christina (Chris) Harris Thigpen.   Both Max and Chris gave their time, heart, and resources to many people and organizations in the community.

Max is survived by his two sons, Maxwell LaFaye Thigpen of Macon, Georgia and David Kevin Thigpen (Laura) of Rincon, Puerto Rico.  Surviving grandchildren are Katie and Laura Thigpen, Kimsey Golden (Josh) and Maxwell D. Thigpen (Angela) and great-granddaughter RosaLee Thigpen.  Surviving step-grandchildren are Jean-Paul LaFleur (Leslie), Caroline Loftin (Jamey) and Kim Strickland (Eric) and step great-grandchildren Zachary and Lucas LaFleur; Olivia, Mathew, and Dylan Loftin; Jackson, Anna, and Charlotte Strickland.

Visitation will be held Friday, October 20, 2017 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. and the funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 3 p.m.,  both the visitation and funeral service will be held at Calvary’s Grace Baptist Church in Ailey, Georgia.  Burial will follow in Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery.

The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to Loretta and Charles Truett for their many years of dedicated care and companionship for their Uncle Max.

Flowers are accepted, but the family would appreciate donations to the Calvary’s Grace Baptist Church’s Oconee Youth Camp in Max’s memory.
