Mary (Hodges) Herring

Mrs. Mary Hodges Herring, age 103, of Vidalia, died Thursday, July 11, 2019 in the Community Hospice House in Vidalia, after an extended illness.   She was a native of Wilcox County and moved to Vidalia in 1929.  She was a 1932 graduate of Vidalia High School and a 1934 graduate of Middle Georgia College in Cochran.  She has been a member of the First Baptist Church of Vidalia since 1932 and also was a member of the Steadfast Sunday School Class.  She and her husband Richard S. Herring, Sr. were married on January 27th, 1935 by Dr. J.C. Brewton, and until his death, were married more than seventy years.  In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Harry A. Hodges, Sr. and Daisy Way Hodges; two brothers, Harry A. Hodges, Jr. and William Hodges; and two nephews, Harry A. Hodges III and William Hodges, Jr.

Mrs. Herring is survived by one son, Richard S. Herring, Jr. and wife Evelyn of Lyons; one sister-in-law, Nell Hodges of Vidalia; two grandchildren, Glenn Phillips and wife Kathy of Vidalia, and Terry Phillips of Lyons; two great-granddaughters, Jennifer Phillips of Vidalia, and Jessica Phillips of Vidalia; three great-great-grandchildren, Ariel Sikes of Tennessee, Macy Strickland of Vidalia, and Bryton Sikes of Tennessee; seven nieces, Gayle Corley and husband Bud of Vidalia, Jana Underwood and husband Wayne of Savannah, Bikie Randall of Lyons, and Jennifer Corley of Vidalia, Kelly Leggett, Darla Rice and Cathy Dropkin; two nephews, Jeff Corley and Carson Randall; and a special caregiver, Susan Betancourt.

The funeral service will be held Sunday, July 14th, at 4:30 p.m. in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend Don Moye and Reverend Scott Morrison officiating.   Burial will follow in the Pinecrest Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.
