Martha Ann Thigpen

Martha Ann Thigpen, age 72, of Alston, died Tuesday, December 3, 2019, in the Community Hospice House in Vidalia, after an extended illness.  She was a native of Swainsboro and a 1965 graduate of Swainsboro High School.  She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and a Master’s Degree in Home Economics from Georgia Southern.  She began her teaching career in 1970, teaching sixth through eighth grade Industrial Arts and Home Economics at J.R. Trippe Middle School for thirty years and four years at the Alternative School teaching Math, Science and Life Skills. She was a member of the Georgia Retired Teachers Association, the Mt. Vernon Garden Club and was an Auxilian at Meadows Health in Vidalia for several years.  She was a member of the Uvalda Baptist Church and played the organ for more than forty years.  Martha Ann enjoyed reading and gardening, but her passion was her grandsons.  She was preceded in death by her parents, James Edward Youmans and Rita Nichols Youmans; and her former husband, Buddy Thigpen.

Martha Ann is survived by two daughters, Donna Evans and husband Kendall of Cedar Crossing, and Kimberly Thigpen and Randy Jones of Alston; two grandsons, Kody Evans and Karson Evans of Cedar Crossing; one brother, Danny Youmans and wife Janet of Nashville, Tennessee;  several nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friends, Don and Linda Spence of Alma.

The funeral service will be held Friday, December 6th, at 12:00 Noon in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Pastor Reece Mincey officiating.  J.R. Trippe staff and faculty will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday morning from 10:30 until just prior to the service.

The family will assemble at Martha Ann’s home at 297 West Broad St., Alston.
