Johnny Davis (John Clifford Davis, Jr.), age 70, Vidalia, died peacefully on December 3, 2019 surrounded by his wife, daughters, and siblings at Memorial Hospital in Savannah after a sudden illness. Johnny had a gift with words and loved sharing with many his nostalgia of all things Southern. His zest for life, his love for his South Georgia home and his undeniable humor all made for a man who will be remembered for his kindness, humility and wit. As one sister described him, “his words were his vessel,” and he entertained many with his stories of growing up in the South. Johnny was born in Vidalia, Georgia, and graduated from Vidalia High School in 1967. He attended the University of Georgia and graduated with a Bachelor of Business degree. He spent his life in sales, where his wit and personality served him well. Johnny had spent the last few years of his life in Mount Vernon, Georgia with his wife of 17 years, Mary Ellen O’Brien Davis, who he often affectionately called “Sweet Mary.” He is preceded in death by his mother Sally Henry Davis, and his father John Clifford Davis, Sr.
Johnny is survived by his wife Mary Ellen O’Brien Davis of Mount Vernon; his children Tracey Davis Adams and husband Craig of Vidalia; Millie Davis Whitworth and husband Jeff of Weaverville, NC; Courtenay Davis Staker and husband Chris of Savannah; Casey Allison and his wife Erika of Alpharetta; Holly Allison of Pigeon Forge, TN; his ten grandchildren Campbell, Sawyer, Alex, Henry, Nell, Harris, Georgia, Christopher, Dylan and Ansley, as well as his siblings Peggy Matheson of Vidalia; Emory and wife Marge Davis of Vidalia; Jean and husband Charles Schwabe of Swainsboro and Jane Davis of Vidalia.
A memorial service will be held Friday December 6th, at 3:00 p.m. in the Vidalia Presbyterian Church with Reverend Russell Gladding and Reverend Proctor Chambless officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.
