Ailey, GA

John Robert Brewer of Ailey, GA, born in Lumber City on June 11, 1934, passed away on April 7, 2018, at Oxley Park Health and Rehabilitation Center in Lyons, GA, after a long illness.  He is preceded in death by his father, Floyd Arnold Brewer of Brunswick, GA, his mother, Mary Ella Hardwick Brewer of Tattnall County, GA, his brother, Floyd Arnold Brewer Jr. of Brunswick, GA, his brother, Joseph Daniel Brewer of Dalton, GA, his sister, Sammy Johnson of Brunswick, GA, his sister, Alice Steverson of McRae, GA, and his daughter, Celia JoAnn Brewer of Atlanta, GA.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Faye DeLoach Brewer of Ailey, GA, his sister, Austin Coxwell of Beaufort, SC, his sister, Jimmy Lou Manor of Nahunta, GA, his sister, Dale Brewer of Brunswick, GA, and his guardian son, Azatjon B. Nasretdinov of Bukhara, Uzbekistan.

Mr. Brewer graduated from Glynn Academy in Brunswick, GA, and then from Brewton-Parker Junior College in 1952 where he was ordained in the ministry. In 1954, he completed his Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree at Mercer University. He also received a Master’s degree in Theology at Southern Seminary in Louisville, KY, as well as a Master’s degree in Liberal Arts from Georgia Southern University at Statesboro, GA.

Reverend John Robert Brewer pastored at several churches in southern Georgia and eastern Kentucky before permanently moving to Ailey, GA. He married Faye DeLoach Brewer of Macon, GA, on May 14, 1960.  He became the pastor of the Ailey Baptist Church in 1963 as well as a full-time professor at Brewton-Parker College where he taught English and literature for thirty-nine years. There, he held the first named chair in the history of the college.  In 2000, Professor John Robert Brewer received the governor’s award in the Humanities, a recognition from the governor of Georgia, Roy Barnes. At Brewton-Parker College, he was chosen as the teacher of the year several times as well as an outstanding citizen award for his dedication, support, and involvement in his community from the mayor of Ailey, GA, Mr. Tom Peterson. 

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 12, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Herbert W. Saliba Chapel, Brewton-Parker College, Mount Vernon, GA. Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM until just before the service.
