Vidalia,
Mrs. Joann Dowd Caraway, age 68, of Vidalia, died Monday, February 19, 2018, in the Community Hospice House in Vidalia, after an extended illness. She was a lifelong resident of Toombs County, and was a 1965 graduate of Vidalia High School. She worked as a secretary with Georgia Machine Tool and Die, later with Bruce Durden as a legal secretary, and retired as a family case manager with Meadows Regional Medical Center. She was a member of Calvary Way Church in Lyons. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee Anthony Dowd and Pearl Beasley Hall; three sisters, Polly Herndon, Ruby Mobley, and Christine Clark; and two brothers, Jake Dowd and Wilmer Dowd.
Mrs. Caraway is survived by her husband, Elemer Caraway of Vidalia; three sons, Tony Banks and wife Robyn, Austin Caraway, and Dennis Thornton and wife Lisa, all of Vidalia; three step-daughters, Annette C. Smith and husband Bruce of Rentz, Melinda C. Yawn and husband David of Vidalia, and Cynthia C. Oxford and husband James of Wrightsville; two sisters, Lucille Dykes and husband George of Vidalia, and Carolyn Dowd Mobley of Rex; two brothers, Eddie Dowd and wife Barbara of Vidalia, and Buddy Dowd and wife Frances of Riverdale; seven grandchildren, Tracy, Ashley, Shayla, Katie, Kyle, Kirsten, and Caleb; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Thursday, February 22nd at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Pastor Reece Mincey and Reverend Tim Green officiating. Burial will follow in the Sharpe Cemetery near Alston.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.
