Mr. Walter Jackson “Jack” Burgess, age 73, of Vidalia, died Thursday, June 1, 2017, in The Oaks Bethany in Vidalia, after an extended illness and a brief worsening of his health.  He was a native of McRae, and was a 1961 graduate of Telfair County High School.  He started his career with Flowers -Derst Baking Company in 1967, retired after forty-six years of service, and was affectionately known as the “Bread Man”.  He served six years in the Army National Guard, and was a former Deacon and member of the Beulah Baptist Church in Wheeler County.  He was preceded in death by his son, Neal Paul Burgess in 1981; parents, Roy Lee Burgess and Myrtle Spires Burgess; and a sister, Jimmie Burgess Grainger.

Mr. Burgess is survived by his dearest friends and caregivers, Sarah and Bob Stembridge of Vidalia; two brothers, Lawrence Spires and wife Eva of McRae, and James Burgess and wife Ellen of Leesburg; one sister, Jean Burgess Peterson and husband Burno of Perry; several nieces and nephews; and his devoted therapy and service dogs, Maddie and Mocha.

The funeral service will be held Sunday, June 4th at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend K.C. Seabury officiating.  Burial will follow in the Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 1:00 until just prior to the service.
